Did Chael Prove He Is The Best?

chael-sonnenOne of the most exciting main events in UFC history is in the books and Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen deserve all the credit in the world for putting on an incredible fight at UFC 117 over the weekend in Oakland. Silva left the octagon victorious, but the fight left many wondering if Sonnen was in fact the best 185 lbs fighter in the world.

From opening bell until 3:10 in the 5th round Sonnen battered, bruised and beat up Silva so badly that final numbers showed Sonnen landing most strikes on Silva in all of Silva’s previous UFC fights combined. An impressive accomplishment indeed. Even more impressive is that unless your last name was Sonnen you gave Chael exactly a 0% chance to even come close to Anderson’s belt Saturday night. Read More

Who will Fight Jake Shields First?

jake-shieldsJake Shields and his team have officially announced that he has signed with the UFC and will make his promotional debut at 170 lbs, his natural weight class. Recently Shields found a home in the Strikeforce middleweight division with the lack of depth at 170 lbs. He beat Robbie Lawler, Jason Miller and Dan Henderson - all impressive wins. He will be entering the heavily stacked UFC welterweight division and we decided to take a crack at some options for his first fight.

1.Paulo Thiago

Thiago is coming off a decision loss to Martin Kampman at UFC 115 in June. Prior to that he has wins over Josh Koshcheck and Mike Swick and sports a 3-2 UFC record.

Can Anyone Stop Brock Lesnar??

lesnarSaturday night was a coming out party for Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in Las Vegas. Not that we didn’t know who he was before. The giant 6′3 265 lbs ball of muscle is hard to miss. But what we saw from Lesnar on Saturday was a thrilling come from behind victory and a shout out to the entire MMA world that there is no quit in Brock Lesnar and he will be extremely difficult to beat.

In round 1 of their heavyweight title fight, Shane Carwin hit Lesnar hard with a barrage of punches and the referee was seconds away from stopping the fight on numerous occasions. Lesnar was being mauled by the similar sized Carwin only to escape the round, and the pounding for an easy 10-8 loss. Read More

Strikeforce Strikes Out

werdum-fedorIt wasn’t just Fedor that tapped out last night – Strikeforce did too. Give Strikeforce time to die its rightful death but do not debate the conclusion – Strikeforce is tapping out.

Strikeforce is learning a painful lesson that could have been avoided. They are following the failed strategy of the World Hockey League (Bobby Hull), The American Football League (Joe Namath) and The North American Soccer League (Pele) in signing big names in hopes of eating away at the established player in their market. Never worked before, won’t work now.

Strikeforce bet on Fedor with a big contract. They tossed in Dan Henderson as a little salad dressing on the Emperor’s salad. Read More

Hominick Happy With Win, Wants Garcia Next

mark-vs-yvesMark Hominick put on a fantastic performance Sunday night at WEC 49 defeating Montreal native Yves Jabouin. Hominick won fight of the night and on a card full of great fights, this one certainly stood out. Hominick withstood early pressure from Jabouin and knew his game plan was the right one.

“I knew heading into the fight the later rounds would be when I would take over and my body attack would be the decider. Yves is very explosive and dangerous in the early part of all of his fights and tends to fade as the fight gets deeper.” Hominick said Tuesday night from his Ontario home.

“That fight was meant to happen going on 8 years and lived up to the hype it had behind it.  I wanted to finish him with strikes so bad and to illustrate my level of striking for sure.” Read More

Should the UFC use the smaller WEC cage?

wec-cageThe WEC proved once again Sunday night that smaller doesn’t necessarily mean less exciting. In fact, the exact opposite has rang true the last three WEC shows and it’s likely that this trend will continue as they build more stars in their smaller weight classes. Many fans were clamouring late Sunday and early Monday that many of the WEC fights are better than the fights of their big brother, the UFC. Read More

Fitting End to Liddell’s Historic Career

chuck-liddell1It was a fitting end for a legend in the sport Saturday night at UFC 115. Chuck Liddell came into his main event fight with Rich Franklin having lost 4 of his last 5 and being knocked out in 3 of them. It was Chuck’s last stand and he left it all in the cage. He came out like the Chuck of old with his hands and feet ready for war and it was late in round 1, with his once rock solid chin gone from years of battles and knockouts scummed to a Franklin right hand that put him down and out.

Many are sad that Liddell with no longer grace the octagon. We will never see the Iceman’s lethal right hand and overpowering punches. We will never see the mo hawked rock star, who was truly the first Read More
