Boxing Is Still in the Game

SPORT BOXINGSaturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas boxing proved once again that they are not down and out for the count. In one of the most incredible boxing matches of the year Juan Manual Marquez stopped Australian Michael Katsidis in the 9th round in a back and forth fight that referee Kenny Bayless waived off in the 9th after Katsidis ate a large number of unanswered punches.

The fight itself proved exciting, but it was boxing’s ability to deliver a card and main event that even the toughest of boxing critics had to agree lived up to the hype. Marquez was put on the mat in round 3 when Katsidis delivered a hard left hand that had the champ down for a 9 count and it looked like that might be the end.   Read More

Is Okami Really Next?

okamiAt UFC 122 Yushin Okami proved a few things. That he was better than Nate Marquardt. That he is always improving. And that he isn’t ready for Anderson Silva. Not even close. In the main event Saturday night Okami showed his usual self – calm and composed and put some of us to sleep. This has been the criticism of Okami in the past. From the casual fan to the President Dana White, Okami has been called boring. Read More

Here Cropy Cropy Cropy. Here Cropy Cropy Cropy

silva_vs_crocop_ii_hkCro Cop will be back in the UFC.

The word is already out so I don’t feel I am sharing any confidential information at this point.

The UFC has not given up their quest for Mirko Filipovic and in fact are going on the aggressive to bring him back.

Believe it or not, I was hiding in a nearby vacant office and overhead two critical conversations in the pursuit to bring Cro Cop back to the UFC. The first was the planning session between UFC President Dana White and UFC Co-Owner Lorenzo Fertittaand the second was with Fertitta and Cro Cop himself. Read More

Can UFC 100 Live Up to the Hype?

ufc1001I’m doing everything I can not to get my hopes up.

I want to be shocked, surprised, amazed at the spectacle.

I don’t want another Forrest Gump.  Yes, Forrest Gump.

You know how it is – that movie that everyone has seen, that everyone tells you is the greatest movie ever made, that you decide to finally watch and….it is a big letdown.  The hype was too strong for reality to ever come close.

UFC100 is close.  Very close.  I’m getting emails, texts, phone calls daily on it:

“Two weeks buddy, it’s gonna rock!!!” Read More

Klitschko vs. Chagaev, FINALLY!

klitzI couldn’t believe my eyes when it flashed across the screen.

Klitschko vs. Chagaev.

Did they really just say it?  Are all my boxing dreams coming true?  Klitschko vs. Chagaev I whispered to myself.  It’s here.  Deep breaths.

I had to do it; I had to check online to see if tickets were available.  Venue…venue…where was this legendary matchup being held.   Here it is – Gelsenkirchen.  Read More

Machida Will Toast His Victory over Rashad Evans with Pee

Image of Lyota Machida from lyotomachida.netWith all eyes on the looming UFC100, let’s not overlook what will be an interesting battle at UFC98 where Lyoto Machida will replace Rampage Jackson in a title bout against Rashad Evans.

You’ve heard about the video – two undefeated fighters, one cup of pee…. or something along those lines. Well, here it is live in Vegas.

Machida has quietly dismantled some of the biggest names in the sport – Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz and yes even Sokoudjou. And by quietly some would say boring. Machida has countered, as is his style, that boring is fine with him provided he continues to win. He’s not looking to dazzle, he’s looking for the belt. Read More

Good Luck, Chuck

Image of Shogun Rua and Chuck Liddell, courtesy of ufc.com“One night and one more time. Thanks for the memories.”

It wasn’t the way it was supposed to end.

You could read his lips as he rose one last time from the canvass – “what happened?” There was no need for a microphone on the referee to know what was said in return. “You got hit Chuck. One last time…” Read More

How Should we View Rampage Heading in to UFC96

Overheard at an anger management class:

Image of Rampage Jackson courtesy of api.ning.com

“I am a terrible loser. I mean I truly despise all things that relate to losing.

I have a bad temper. I lash out at times when patience would clearly be the best strategy.

Finally, there are definitely some stupid things I have done in my past that I regret and I would prefer to have a “do over” available. Read More
