GSP Leading the Charge

georges-st-pierre-ufc-83Georges St Pierre will enter the cage at UFC 124 as the favorite over arch rival Josh Koscheck. It’s the ultimate good guy vs the perfect bad guy match up that even Vince McMahon couldn’t have created in his wildest dreams.  The UFC is reporting a record number of tickets purchased and could be a record Pay Per View buy. Georges St Pierre is not so quietly becoming the leader of the MMA movement into the mainstream and we are glad he is.

St Pierre is the perfect ‘good guy’ for MMA. He is clean cut. He speaks well. He is respectful of the sport and his opponents and he has landed himself endorsement deals with Gatorade and Under Armor in the last 12 months. Without even realizing it, the MMA community has jumped onto Georges back and we all wonder how far he can take it. Read More

MMA At Risk Because of Poor Judging

mma-judgingThe embarrassing state of MMA judging reared it’s ugly head once again Saturday night at the TUF finale in Las Vegas. In what will go down as one of the worst decisions in MMA history, Leonard Garcia was given a(nother) gift decision over Nam Phan, in a fight where Phan dominated most of each round and Garcia counted by throwing wild hay makers into the air.

It’s not the first time there will be a bad decision and certainly not the last. But if MMA and the UFC wants to continue their rise in popularity something needs to be done. No fan wants to watch an event where the outcome can often be determined by incompetent judging. See how many fans would tune into an NFL game if one team had 30 straight penalties against them. What if a ref in hockey kept calling goals back that were clearly in the net? Everyone would conclude the game is a farce and it would begin to crumble. Read More

Whats Next For Forrest Griffin?

UFC 101 Mixed Martial ArtsForrest Griffin. The fighter every fan has grown to love had a bump in the road Saturday as he was knocked silly by Anderson Silva at UFC 101. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. The membership numbers for the “I got knocked Stupid by Anderson Silva” is growing by the month and fees are minimal – one right hand to the mouth. But Griffin is at a crossroads. He has gone from TUF 1 champion to UFC champion and is now the proud owner of back to back knock out losses. The UFC needs to be cautious who they throw him in with next. He is one of their most recognizable faces inside and outside of the cage and helped the sport in so many ways. Here is who should be next in line to face Griffin and why it would work. Read More

Carwin vs. Velasquez Next Up For a Title Shot

cain_velasquez_2At UFC 99 Cain Velasquez proved to many critics that he is the real deal. Prior to his fight with Cheick Kongo he was described as a beast, and one of the best fighters his American Kickboxing Academy has ever seen. It was difficult to understand how the man with only 5 pro fights could be lauded with such little experience inside the cage. Saturday in Germany Cain showed more in his 15 minute dismantling of Kongo, than he had shown in his all his 5 prior fights combined. We saw that Cain has an excellent chin as he took 3 hard shots from Kongo to kick off the 1st and 2nd rounds, but quickly recovered to secure a double leg and put Kongo on his back. A place Kongo would stay for 95% of the fight. Read More

Kimbo’s Management Making Good Decisions

icey-mike-and-kimbo1We all heard the big news this week that legendary backyard fighting sensation Kimbo Slice would be entering the TUF household to live with 15 other Heavyweights to fight it out for a UFC contract. Slice has gone from making $500,000 a fight to sharing a room with 3 others and sleeping in a bunk bed. He will be without TV, internet, a phone and virtually any contact with the outside world for 6 + weeks. Does this sound like a good opportunity? Kimbo’s management thinks so and up this point they haven’t missed a step.

Slice is the first mainstream fighter to build his name strictly by fighting goons in backyards across America and putting them on Youtube. He was given a shot by EliteXC to carry their promotion and with almost zero actual MMA Training, became one of the most well known fighters in the world. After putting a few wins together by fighting over the hill former Read More

St. Pierre Game Plan Will be Too Much for Penn

Think back. Way back to March 4, 2006, when B.J. Penn and GSP met for the first time in the Octagon at UFC 58.

As stated by B.J. Penn during UFC Primetime, he was the better fighter that night in round one. Georges St. Pierre on the other hand, looked like he had just finished a five round title fight with a world class striker. What BJ often fails to realize is how St. Pierre looked when the fight ended and his arm was raised in victory. Read More
