Known for being one of the nicest guys in the sport, heavyweight legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira recently made some controversial statements in an interview regarding his opinion on homosexuals though made it clear he had no problem with having an openly gay fighter train in his gym.
Said Nogueira in an interview with UOL Esporte, “I have no prejudice against the gays, but I wouldn’t train with someone who’s gay. I have no malice. I don’t take our physical contact as (something) sexual. But what if the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling?”
While his personal definition of “prejudice” may come into question based on the comments, “Minotauro” also made it clear he felt the same way when it came to hitting the mat with females.
“I would have no problems having a gay student in my academy, but I would rather not train with him,” the 35-year old concluded on the topic.
The relationship between sexual preference and Mixed Martial Arts has been well-documented ranging from opponents directing slurs at each other to UFC President Dana White using similar terms when describing individuals he dislikes to Strikeforce’s Liz Carmouche recently coming out and announcing she is a lesbian.
Though he may be currently immersed in a battle with critics based on the inflammatory viewpoint he expressed, Nogueira is set for an actual fight this weekend at UFC Rio where he faces hard-hitting up-and-comer Brendan Schaub.
