Top heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem may make his living off physical aggression but that very characteristic has landed the hulking Dutchman in hot water. The 31-year old UFC fighter’s name appeared on a court docket today in Las Vegas stemming from a misdemeanor battery charge where Overeem is alleged to have shoved a woman’s face with enough power to send her backwards. The incident occurred while “The Demolition Man” was in town celebrating New Year’s Eve weekend as well as his victory at UFC 141 over Brock Lesnar.
While Overeem will not actually stand in front of a judge until sentencing takes place on February 21, if found guilty he could be force to pay $1,000 and spend up to six months in jail.
“Alistair was not arrested, but was summoned to court,” said Overeem’s lawyer in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence.”
No comment was issued by either Overeem or his employers at Zuffa.
Overeem is set to face divisional champion Junior dos Santos this summer though no official date/location has been set yet.

MMATraining Take: I’m not passing any sort of judgment until the story comes out in court. It sounds like a “he said, she said” situation as I tend to believe the police would have arrested him had he actually physically assaulted a female with witnesses present (or any other type of evidence like bruising/blood). It’s also interesting the woman hasn’t been identified yet so the public doesn’t know if she’s a stranger or his acquaintance.
