Bulgarian heavyweight Blagoi Ivanov is no stranger to fighting. A decorated Sambo practitioner who has a win over Fedor Emelianenko in the sport, Ivanov has gone 6-0 since transitioning to MMA with success against Kazuyuki Fujita and Ricco Rodriguez as well as a pair of victories under the Bellator banner. However, Ivanov is facing a very different battle at this moment in time and one with stakes far exceeding anything offered inside a cage.
According to multiple reports, Ivanov was stabbed while with a group of friends at a restaurant in Bulgaria. Though details are still developing, it appears Ivanov was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a group of armed men stormed the venue with one stabbing Ivanov using a blade long enough to penetrate his heart. Ivanov was rushed to the hospital and underwent a lengthy surgery but remains on life support at the time of this report.
Ivanov fought in Bellator as part of the Season 5 heavyweight tournament, winning his opening round bout with a second round submission before having to withdraw due to injury. Five of his six triumphs have been the result of a finishing performance.

MMATraining: Hopefully he’ll emerge from this situation with a scar and a story since it sounds like Ivanov was completely innocent in the matter. It’s truly a reminder that no how big, strong, or tough anyone is there are always seedy elements out there ready to even the score with a weapon who simply don’t value human life. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with Ivanov and his family.
