Brandon Vera out for up to six months with torn ligament

The good news for fans of Brandon Vera is that his arm was not broken on Saturday night as the popular light heavyweight had originally feared after opponent Eliot Marshall locked in a deep Armbar during the closing minutes of their clash at UFC 137. The bad news for fans of Vera is that rather than suffering a fracture “The Truth” sustained a torn ligament keeping him out of the Octagon for up to six months pending a doctor’s clearance.

The list featuring Vera’s condition, as well as the rest of the medical suspensions stemming from the event, was released earlier today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Also worth mentioning, headliners Nick Diaz and B.J. Penn were both issued mandatory vacations as well stemming from damage suffered in their headlining bout, though in the case of Penn the ruling could be a moot point given his statements regarding retirement. However, technically he is suspended for sixty days with Diaz only getting a month-long nod.

Here is the complete list of UFC 137 medical suspensions:

Danny Downes – Suspended until 11/29/11 with no contact until 11/20/11 due to lacerations
Brandon Vera – Must have torn left elbow ligament cleared by orthopedist or suspended until 4/28/12, minimum suspension until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
Tyson Griffin – Suspended until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
Bart Palaszewski – Must have right hand X-Rayed and cleared by orthopedist if positive, minimum suspension until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
Dennis Siver – Suspended until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
George Roop – Suspended until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11 due to lacerations
Mirko Filipovic – Suspended until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
Matt Mitrione – Suspended until 12/14/11 with no contact until 11/29/11
B.J. Penn – Suspended until 12/29/11 with no contact until 12/14/11
Nick Diaz – Suspended until 11/29/11 with no contact until 11/20/11

MMATraining Take: No real shockers here. Tough break for Vera though when considering the injuries he’s dealt with stemming from his last few fights.
