Chan Sung Jung’s win over Dustin Poirier named Fight of the Night

Many fans labeled last night’s headlining fight at UFC on Fuel 3 between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung as having Fight of the Night potential and, as it turns out, they were absolutely right.

The exciting four-round rumble featured a number of near-finishes including Poirier escaping some solid submission attempts and seemingly shifting the momentum back in his favor after dropping the first two frames. However, in the end Jung locked up a D’Arce Choke and sent Poirier to sleep shortly thereafter.

The bout was indeed named Fight of the Night, earning each man $40,000 for the honor, while Jung’s finish was pegged as Submission of the Night (adding another $40,000 in his pocket).

Meanwhile, Tom Lawlor had a birthday to remember after scoring $40,000 for his Knockout of the Night against Jason MacDonald. Lawlor, who turned 29 yesterday and even had his cornermen come down to the cage with party hats/noisemakers, picked up his fourth UFC win after stopping MacDonald with strikes less than a minute into their match-up.

MMATraining Take: I’m all about spreading around the wealth so I wouldn’t have been opposed to Fabio Maldonado-Igor Pokrajac winning Fight of the Night but it’s impossible to argue against Poirier-Jung deserving it too. However, Cody McKenzie’s choke of Marcus LeVesseur was also bonus-worthy on the submission front so it still seems they could have helped out the little guy as it were instead of hooking up Jung with twice the money.
