In a finish fitting for a Hollywood movie, welterweight Chris Lytle walked away from MMA Sunday night with his hands raised and a pair of bonuses in his pocket. Lytle faced British brawler Dan Hardy in the main event at UFC Live 5 where the two lived up to their pre-fight promise of banging it out on their feet, at least until Hardy mistakenly shot in for a takedown in the closing minute of the third round and got caught in a Guillotine Choke for the submission stoppage.
The win marked the 22nd submission of Lytle’s career and resulted in a related event-bonus as well as “Fight of the Night”. The awards were the ninth and tenth of the Indianan’s run in the UFC.
Lytle vs. Hardy capped off an event featuring entertaining action throughout including Ben Henderson’s continued ascension through the lightweight ranks. The former WEC champ stopped Jim Miller’s eight-fight winning streak with a varied attack, dominating the stand-up portion of their fight as well as doing enough on the ground to dish out damage while avoiding Miller’s multiple submission attempts.
