The Ultimate Fighter 15 got a dose of unwanted drama this week when Dominick Cruz tore his ACL while training for an upcoming fight against rival coach Urijah Faber. Though no specifics were available about the injury, Cruz has been pulled from the July 7 bout with Faber at UFC 148 as a result of his condition and will likely be out until 2013.
News of his status was confirmed by the UFC as well as Cruz who expressed his disappointment via Twitter, saying he was “bummed” but would work hard to come back and “put on a show”.
Cruz has dealt with injuries in the past but primarily to his hands rather than something as serious as a torn knee ligament. He hasn’t fought since this past October meaning he could be out of action for up to eighteen months depending on the severity of the injury.
No word has surfaced on what the UFC plans to do with Faber though fellow bantamweight contender Renan Barao happens to already be scheduled for the event “The California Kid” was scheduled to face Cruz on.

MMATraining Take: Definitely a bummer though Barao-Faber makes a lot of sense. Still, the champ being out for an extended period is always a bad thing. Hopefully the UFC will reconsider having their title-holders on TUF from here on out based on the time it requires.
