Two of the top lightweights outside of the UFC have indeed agreed to face off this spring in the form of a bout between Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki. While the match-up had been rumored up to this point, Alvarez himself recently confirmed the pairing was in place with the paperwork waiting to be signed.
Alvarez’s admission came while in Chicago for the UFC on FOX 2 open workout where he was helping Michael Johnson get ready for his fight against Shane Roller.
“It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been wanting to get this back for the past three years so I’m just happy I got the opportunity and that the promoter, Bjorn Rebney, was able to make this come together and happen,” said Alvarez in an interview with The Fight Nerd.
The two 155ers first met on New Year’s Eve in 2008 where Aoki submitted the 22-3 Alvarez with a Heel Hook just 92 seconds into the bout. Both men have racked up a ton of success since.

MMATraining Take: I’m down for this rematch to take place though Alvarez is definitely at risk of losing two straight given the threat Aoki poses on the submission front. If Aoki can get him on the ground it could be a very short night for the former Bellator champion.
