While UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes may not have been as sexy on paper as the UFC’s last stop in Rio de Janeiro the event certainly lived up to the same level of entertainment with a raucous crowd and evening full of highlight-reel finishes.
In perhaps the card’s most impressive performance, Knockout of the Night went to Edson Barboza after landing a flush Spinning Heel-Kick to opponent Terry Etim’s face, sending the stiff Brit spilling backwards onto the mat. The victory maintained Barboza’s unbeaten record at 10-0 and was the first knockout loss of Etim’s career. The 25-year old Brazilian earned $65,000 for the distinction.
The bout actually resulted in dual honors, as Fight of the Night also went to Etim vs. Barboza for an evenly matched bout resulting in the aforementioned finish. Similarly to KotN, each man received $65,000 for their performance.
Finally, surprising few, Submission of the Night went to Rousimar Palhares who has won nine of his last eleven fights by way of tap-out. Palhares earned his $65k by locking one of his patented Heel Hooks onto Mike Massenzio a little over a minute into the opening round of their bout which quickly had the 29-year old New Jersey native tapping out in agony.

MMATraining Take: No arguments here. All men were deserving though I wouldn’t necessarily have given Barboza-Etim FotN so much as replaced it with a second Knockout award for Jose Aldo (whose finish of Mendes was spectacular as well).
