It’s impossible to forget UFC heavyweight Frank Mir’s vicious submission of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in December or the image of Tim Sylvia’s forearm snapping years back in a bout with the former champion. Now, with current title-holder Junior dos Santos in front of him, it appears a new opponent needs to be wary about exiting the Octagon with a splint in tow.
“I think Dos Santos wants to end it quickly because, we gotta be realistic…I heard his corner saying, ‘The only chance Mir has is if it goes to the ground.’ I’m like, ‘Well, the only chance he has is if it doesn’t go to the ground.’ It goes back and forth,” explained Mir on the most recent episode of UFC Primetime. “He goes to the ground with me, he’s dead. We might as well go ahead, start calling the orthopedic surgeons and prep the room.”
Mir and Dos Santos will headline this weekend’s UFC 146 lineup with a PPV card comprised of all heavyweights. Mir enters the bout on a three-fight winning streak while “Cigano” hasn’t stumbled since 2007 – an Armbar loss no less.

MMATraining Take: I actually think both Mir and Dos Santos are wrong. They each have a chance no matter where the action takes place. JDS can defend Mir on the ground and potentially position himself for ground-and-pound, while Mir has solid striking as well and packs power considering his size/strength.
