Less than 24 hours after the UFC confirmed heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos would defend his title against Alistair Overeem over Memorial Day Weekend the organization has added a bout to the same card set to determine the individual who will face the winner later this year.
Earlier today the UFC announced Frank Mir will mix it up with Cain Velasquez on May 26 at UFC 146. Both men are familiar with divisional gold as each has held the heavyweight title in the past before.
Mir is currently on a three-fight winning streak with victories over Roy Nelson, Mirko Filipovic, and most recently Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira who suffered a broken arm in their bout after refusing to tap to a submission attempt. The 32-year old, who celebrates a birthday two days before the upcoming event, holds an overall record of 16-5 with an even split between TKOs/submission to his credit.
Though Velasquez only has half of Mir’s in-ring experience the decorated wrestler has been equally successful, taking out the likes of Nogueira, Cheick Kongo, and Brock Lesnar in past pairings. The 9-1 Velasquez suffered the first loss of his career to Dos Santos in November with a chance at redemption no doubt adding fuel to his fire in terms of beating Mir.

MMATraining Take: I genuinely dig the fact the UFC is looking to have a title-eliminator fight on the same card as the championship bout. It not only gives back-to-back performances to compare against each other but aligns the winners for their future fight.
