Though it was originally believed the bout would take place at the Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale it appears flyweights Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall will actually be settling their score a week later at UFC on FX 3. The two talented 125ers originally met earlier this month in the semifinal round of the organization’s four-man field to determine the division’s first champion, turning in a hard-fought, fast-paced performance named Fight of the Night. Unfortunately, the bout’s result was mired in controversy after a ringside official miscalculated the scores, giving Johnson a win when it should have instead been a Draw.
News of the June 8 rematch was confirmed today by the UFC. No location/venue has been revealed thus far.
Johnson holds an overall record of 14-2-1 including wins at bantamweight over Damacio Page, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, and Miguel Torres. Comparably, McCall is 11-2-1 in his career and had come out with his hand raised in four straight prior to the Draw against Johnson. The winner of their fight will face Joseph Benavidez later this year for the right to wear the UFC’s inaugural flyweight title.

MMATraining Take: Similarly to what I said last week when it appeared Johnson-McCall would be fighting on June 1, I’m glad each man is healthy enough to fight again in a few months rather than delay things any further. It’s a shame their “sudden victory” round was ruined by an inept individual but at least fans will be treated to a few more frames of excellence.
