UFC lightweight Jim Miller may have eleven other submissions on his record but none are likely as sweet as the one he latched on Melvin Guillard last night in headlining action at UFC on FX, the organization’s debut on the popular cable network. The finish came a few minutes into the opening round of action after Miller endured some decent punishment at the hands and knees of the hard-hitting striker only to find an opening, then procure the Rear-Naked Choke.
Miller’s finish of Guillard was named Submission of the Night and earned him $45,000 for the honor.
Fight of the Night went to the brief but entertaining affair between Pat Barry and Christian Morecraft. Morecraft started out strong, putting the affable Barry in some bad positions. However, the New Orleans native was able to escape when necessary and ended up planting his opponent firmly on the mat with a perfectly placed strike. Similarly to Miller each won $45,000 as a result.
Last but certainly not least, Knockout of the Night was rightfully handed to newcomer Nick Denis who made debut in as successful fashion as one could hope for, knocking out opponent Joseph Sandoval in less than 30 seconds. He too received $45k.

MMATraining Take: I think Josh Neer deserved SotN. Hopefully he was taken care of backstage even if he didn’t get the official distinction since his technique was less common and didn’t come against a guy who has lost 90% of his defeats via tap-out.
