Jose Aldo: “After I knock him out at home the fans will go crazy with happiness.”

Fans may only be a day removed from UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem but the UFC train has already set out towards its next destination – Rio de Janeiro at UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes.

The bantamweight showdown between champion Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes is two weeks away. Though the trash-talk between the two has been relatively scarce one constant has been Mendes’ stance regarding Aldo’s inability to deal with his wrestling ability. However, the 20-1 Brazilian doesn’t appeared too concerned, having trained with Gray Maynard to prepare and beating past grapplers he’s faced.

“I’m not worried about Chad’s power and strength,” said Aldo of the undefeated Mendes in an extended preview for the event. “I’m one of the strongest guys in this weight class. After I knock him out at home the fans will go crazy with happiness.”

Aldo’s confidence in a finish is clear, as the 25-year old assured, “A knockout or submission is very likely.”

Aldo-Mendes will headline a lineup also featuring Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson. The main card will be broadcast on PPV with preliminary action on FX. Other bouts at UFC 142 include Sam Stout vs. Thiago Tavares and Mike Massenzio vs. Rousimar Palhares.

Check out the extended preview below:

MMATraining Take: I’m not so sure Aldo can knock Mendes out but regardless he better show up ready to defend takedowns because that’s what he’s getting throughout. I have no doubt Mendes will try and blanket Aldo, making for a boring but potentially winning strategy. Still, I have faith Aldo can fend him off with knees and a very active guard. It will definitely be interesting to watch unfold…at least as long as Mendes isn’t wholly successful in his attempts.
