Featured article by MMATraining.com's Kage Phan

MMATraining.com has learned that the XFA is looking to have Xtreme Couture’s Head coach Shawn Tompkins first fight to be against none other than Ken Shamrock, according to Tompkins. The XFA will use K-1 rules and therefore, will have no ground fighting. MMATraining.com spoke with Tompkins and he informed us that

“I Just signed a 3 fight deal with XFA, which is a K-1 kickboxing promotion in Las Vegas. I’ll be doing my first fight September 26th. Between September, December and February. They are looking at my first fight being Ken Shamrock”.

image of shawn tompkinsTompkins has fought professional MMA before, but is most known for being one of the top striking and MMA coaches in all of the world. He has worked at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas as their Head Striking coach for over a year and will have no shortage of good training partners to prepare with.

Tompkins, from London, Ontario and has help mould the careers of Mark Hominick, Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki from a young age. Tompkins be busy in the coming week and a half, as he will corner Hominick in his fight vs. Savant Young and Vitor Belfort, when he battles Terry Martin at Affliction:Banned. When asked about Belfort, Tompkins said

“He looks like the Vitor of old. He looks better than ever”.

Shamrock is coming off a March 2008 loss to Robert Berry in Cage Rage and looks to rebound from that, in his XFA debut. The 44 year old Shamrock has been long rumoured to be having a super fight with his brother Frank, but those rumours have died down as of late.

  1. Jesse Riggs Says:

    Oh noooo..

This fight will be under K-1 rules.. does Ken even know those rules? He will probably go nuts and try and attack Tompkins..

Ken needs to chill and stop fighting..

  2. GSPeed Says:

    Ken Ken Ken.

As much as I loved Ken back in the early 90s.. VERY early 90s.. he needs to give it up..

Tompkins actually has great stand up.. just never was great on the ground.. which was his MMA downfall..

  3. Ron Walker Says:

It pains me to say this.. but Ken has turned into one of the biggest jokes in sports..

poor guy.. hasn’t won a fight in his last 7 or something..

    won’t win here either..

  4. Joe Hish Says:

This might be a closer fight than everyone thinks..

Tompkins has some awesome stand up.. and Ken doesn’t, but he’s got a lot of heart..

  5. mikey5time Says:

Show me a fighter that’s all heart, and I’ll show you a fighter waiting for a beating.

    Ken’s waiting for a beating.

  6. Joe Hish Says:

Ken’s heart won’t let him take a beating.. he never really gets messed up..

  7. JR Says:

ken does not have heart. he is showing up for a paycheck. he hasnt shown up to actually fight in years. hes become a heartless chump looking to make a few ez grand by finding a soft spot on the mat as soon as possible.

  8. Rickie Dog Says:

Ken Ken Ken.. you need to shut it down..

    shut it down for good..

Ken said in an interview once that the the problem is to be a good fighter you have to have the will to never give up.. and that same will makes you do dumb things when you are older and you just don’t want to quit..

that was THREE years ago he said that! wow.. give it up..

  9. Frank Shamrock Says:

    I’m Ken’s brother, Frank.

What a lot of people don’t know is that Ken is extremely well endowed, seriously its like a tube of Pringles when its up.

I say Ken takes it in the 3rd, submission by flying ****drop.

  10. Ron Walker Says:

I wonder if that’s actually Frank Shamrock.. I could see him coming on here and making fun of Ken..

    He couldn’t help it..

  11. Dinky Doo Says:

If no one else will say this.. I will.. this will be a good fight.. Shawn is a great kickboxer and Ken was one of the best MMA fighters of all time.. and he’s fought in KB and MT before.. so he’s not totally lost..

They both love to fight, so let them get in there and have some fun..

  12. Bob Kismet Says:

QUOTE from Joe Hish: “This might be a closer fight than everyone thinks..

Tompkins has some awesome stand up.. and Ken doesn’t, but he’s got a lot of heart..”

Ken Shamrock has heart? The guy that begged his corner to throw in the towel against Fujita due to fatigue? The guy that gets KO’ed when you look at him sideways? Sheesh … now I’ve heard it all.

  13. LionsDen Says:

Ken has NOT been contacted about this fight. There are currently no plans for Ken to take part in a kickboxing or any fight of any sort. To all his fans he is currently doing well and has been busy making appearances, volunteering with the troops and local municipal help, and opening lions den gyms.

  14. bob Says:

I am sorry to anyone who is a fan of ken Shammie but hes not a very good fighter at all.I like others believe he shows up for paychecks. He has NEVER had good cardio [a must for any athlete]he is very slow and has no leg co ordination[clumsy on feet].
He has/does and always will think that fighting is all about the weight gym.I would have thought after many hits to the head he might wake up but nope.

  15. Confus Says:

Obviously this post is outdated. Since Ken will face Kimbo pretty soon there’s no possibility to get clearance and make the fight on the 26th.

  16. Confus Says:

Apart from my previous statement, i think Ken still has all the tools needed to win fights. All the adversities he has faced in preperation aside, i believe a big part of his let-down performances of late can be blamed on his gameplan going into fights.

If he can let go of his pride and go back to basics, i believe he will win the Kimbo showdown.

  17. Georges St. Pierre Says:

I’m not impressed with Shamrocks last 15 performances!!!

  18. BJ Penn Says:

    Shamrock is a joke.I agree GSP.Oh….and GSP……You’re dead!!!
