The final two heavyweights on Strikeforce’s roster were poised to send the division off on a high note this evening in the form of Daniel Cormier’s clash with Josh Barnett in the Strikeforce Grand Prix Final. Cormier and Barnett outlasted a number of their peers in the tournament with the former beating Jeff Monson/Antonio Silva to earn his slot and the latter taking out Brett Rogers/Sergei Kharitonov. In the end Cormier emerged with his hand raised after a tremendous effort against Barnett, picking “The Warmaster” apart while standing and scoring some solid takedowns including a beautiful slam.
Also scheduled to scrap at tonight’s event, Gilbert Melendez put his lightweight gold up for grabs against Josh Thomson and retained his reign albeit barely based on a very close decision win, while light heavyweight contenders Mike Kyle–Rafael Cavalcante collided with “Feijao” coming out with an overdue shot at the vacant title after submitting Kyle early on in the first frame.
