Few fight fans can forget the absolute war waged UFC welterweights Martin Kampmann and Diego Sanchez this past March at UFC Live 3. However, the bout also marks an evening Kampmann can’t seem to fully put behind him after watching a badly battered Sanchez walk away with a decision win despite being hurt a number of times throughout the contest.
Kampmann recently referred to the match-up in an interview pertaining to his upcoming scrap with Rick Story at UFC 139. While the Dane’s mind clearly seems to be on Story, it also appears the loss to Sanchez is still an open wound and altered his mindset when it comes to mixing it up in the cage.
“I am sick of letting these fights go to the judge’s decision, especially the way the decisions have been going in my last two fights,” explained “The Hitman” in an interview with BuddhaSport. “I beat Diego (Sanchez) up pretty badly and he has got the scars to prove it. I won that fight. I’m not looking to go the distance ever again. I plan on going in and finishing Rick Story. I’m here to whoop somebody’s ass and make a statement.”
The other defeat Kampmann was alluding to was a hard-fought Split Decision loss to Jake Shields at UFC 121.
“I want to rematch both. I can’t pick just one,” Kampmann continued. “When I fought Shields, I made a lot of stupid mistakes and I’m really upset with myself over that performance. That was my fight but I gave it away. When I fought Diego, I still made a lot of mistakes but I think overall, I fought better than I did against Shields.
Before getting a rematch Kampmann will need to get by the always-tough Story on November 19 in San Jose. Story is 13-4 in his career with past wins over Dustin Hazelett, Johny Hendricks, and Thiago Alves.

MMATraining Take: I don’t care about seeing Shields vs. Kampmann II since their first fight was somewhat of a snoozer but Sanchez vs. Kampmann II is a must! Their initial encounter resulted in one of the greatest bouts of the year featuring back-and-forth action with both doing damage to the other. Add to the fact it’s now personal between the two, as Kampmann’s comments are not the only time either side has taken a verbal shot at the other, and you’ve got a recipe for another incredible in-ring offering!
