The UFC has announced a new main event for the organization’s August 4 outing in Los Angeles after the original headliner was scrapped when Brian Stann went down this week due to injury. Now, in the place of Stann’s scrap with Hector Lombard, former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will face Brandon Vera.
UFC officials have confirmed the match-up.
Rua hasn’t fought since November when he duked it out with Dan Henderson in one of the year’s top bouts. The 30-year old Brazilian holds a 20-6 overall record with a number of notable wins under his belt including those over Quinton Jackson, Alistair Overeem, and Forrest Griffin.
The 12-5 Vera will enter the Octagon as a major underdog but is coming off a win over Eliot Marshall and holds other past victories against Keith Jardine and Frank Mir.

MMATraining Take: I’m not sure how this fight is better than Bader-Machida, or why they wouldn’t just have Machida fight Vera and Bader meet “Shogun”, but I’m definitely looking forward to watching the two of them mix it up.
