Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez put on a show in the main event of Bellator 58 Saturday night, as Chandler scored a fourth-frame submission victory over Alvarez to claim the company’s lightweight championship.
Chandler nearly stopped the fight in the first, as he rocked the former title-holder with a series of heavy strikes and nearly finished things early on before Alvarez, regarded as one of the top 155 pounders in the world, recovered with a strong second round and dominated the third.
In the first “championship round”, Chandler mounted another attack that resulted in him taking the back of Alvarez to lock in a quick Rear-Naked Choke to score the win, the belt and improve to 9-0 in his career.
“I’ve got to say my face looks pretty darn good,” joked the bruised and battered Chandler in the post-fight interview inside the cage Saturday night. “Eddie’s the man, I don’t know that we could do a better fight than that. He brought it to me the whole time.”
Alvarez, who suffered a deep cut on his mouth in the fight, looked like he had been through a war afterwards, saying, “Me and Joachim Hansen fought a fight like this not too long ago, and in this case, I don’t think there’s any losers on this one. Congratulations Mike.”

MMATraining Take: If you missed Chandler-Alvarez, make sure you either check out a replay of the event or watch the fight online because MMA fans will be talking about it for quite a while. Both men went toe-to-toe with each other for the better part of three-plus rounds, and a rematch would be something Bellator could promote very well.
