Gilbert Melendez holds on to title after spirited five-round fight against Jorge Masvidal

The final 2011 offering from Strikeforce arrived and the organization closed the year out in style with a card chock-full of talent. Headlined by 155-pound force of nature Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez‘s attempt to retain his divisional title against ATT product Jorge Masvidal, the event also pitted featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos against 12-1 submission-wrestler Hiroko Yamanaka as well as featured K.J. Noons vs. Billy Evangelista and Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux.

Melendez retained his championship despite a stiff test from Masvidal with all of the action involving striking minus one or two brief takedown/submission attempts. After the fight “El Nino” let his bosses at Zuffa know that he wanted them to bring over some talent from the UFC, in particular whomever emerges with the belt in February when Frankie Edgar faces Ben Henderson.

Santos also exited the arena with her reign intact after destroying Yamanaka within the first minute of the fight.
