Thoughts from The Cage: GSP-Penn in Montreal and some Kimbo
Posted by Kage PhanBryan Alvarez of the WrestlingObserver dropped this little bit of information on the MMA world today,
“We will have more tomorrow as this has not yet been made official, but it appears the December 5th UFC will be taking place at the Bell Center in Montreal with George St. Pierre headlining.”
These guys have become notorious for dropping stories on us before anyone has a clue, but what??!! This one seems a little suspicious. December 5th would fall on a Friday, since the Montreal Canadians play on the Saturday. And does the UFC want to use a GSP-Montreal card for a Friday night? Maybe this was the only way to get GSP to fight BJ Penn inside of 2008? Hopefully we find out soon.
Jason Day has had to pull out of his UFC 88 fight with Jason Lambert, due to an injury. Who is replacing him? None other than Canadian Jason MacDonald. The September 6th card will be 2 fights in less than a month for the Nova Scotia native, after his thrilling, yet likely disappointing loss to Demian Maia at UFC 87 just a week and a half ago. If Macdonald can look as solid as he did April 9th, look for a submission victory over the Punisher.
Kimbo Slice’s next opponent is set to be announced this week.. or next.. or whenever EliteXC gets around to it. Any Kimbo news is good news for EliteXC after reports surfaced last week that they better get their act in gear or they won’t be lasting long. If I had to put $10 on a possible match, it would be Ken Shamrock vs Kimbo. This would be an opponent Slice should beat, and Shamrock’s legendary status brings along enough credibility with the casual fan.
UFC 90 in Chicago is close to a sell out according to Dana White. The main event features Anderson Silva taking on tough Canadian Patrick Cote. I’m guessing this fight will much more competitive than more imagine and my guess is opening betting lines will have Silva is the overwhelming favourite.
