Urijah Faber dueling Dominick Cruz at UFC 148 in July

“The California Kid” will have a second shot at not only winning bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz’s title when the two face off this summer but also an opportunity to take the 2-1 lead in their trilogy and redeem himself on Fourth of July Weekend.

According to a post on Twitter by UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, the organization is looking at having Cruz’s third tilt with Urijah Faber take place at UFC 148 on July 7 in Las Vegas. The bout will serve as a pay off from the 135ers’ involvement as coaches on an upcoming season of the Ultimate Fighter.

Faber fell short against Cruz when the two collided last July, fighting valiantly but not doing enough to pick up the decision win in the eyes of those scoring the bout. The 26-5 Faber is coming off submission success over Brian Bowles in his previous appearance, the twelfth such victory of his career.

Comparably,  the 19-1 Cruz has won ten in a row since enduring his only defeat. However, with the loss coming to Faber there’s no doubt he’ll be hard-pressed to make it eleven straight to close that chapter of his life.

MMATraining Take: I have no issue with the event though I’m hopefully Cruz-Faber isn’t the headliner. Their fight is likely to be relatively entertaining but also 25 minutes long. Depending on what happens in Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans it’s possible the winner could fight in July so I’ll be crossing my fingers that such a possibility arises.
