The day has finally arrived for UFC fans to watch Dominick Cruz (18-1) defend his Bantamweight title against Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (14-1) at UFC Live 6. The fight will take place at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.
“The Dominator” will enter the fight coming off a huge decision victory over Urijah Faber at UFC 132 in July. The bout was his first fight and title defense in the UFC since coming over from the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion after Zuffa purchased the company. There were several moments in the fight where the champ was rocked and knocked to the ground by the lightning quick and highly accurate strikes of Faber’s hands. However, he maintained his composure, recovered quickly, and walked away with a victory in his first title defense.
Johnson is coming off a huge win over Miguel Torres at UFC 130. “Mighty Mouse” had entered the fight with Torres as a huge underdog and was not expected by many to win. However he displayed excellent technique throughout the bout and controlled Torres with ease on the ground. At the conclusion of round 3 he had earned himself a unanimous decision victory and a crack at Cruz for the bantamweight title.
In the conference call leading up to the fight Johnson admitted that although he is again projected to be a huge underdog, it does not bother him as he is usually the underdog going into any of his fights. The champ seemed to understand where he was coming from and mentioned that he too was always a huge underdog when he was first starting out in the sport.
There are very few fighters who are as quick and elusive as Cruz, but Johnson is also known for his amazing technique and speed, which Cruz acknowledged during the conference call. He mentioned that Johnson, however, has a different type of speed and that he has plenty of experience dealing with that aspect of the fight as he managed to do with Faber. Will the champ be able to successfully defend his title for a second time and cruise his way to another victory? Make sure you tune to Versus tonight to find out.

MMATraining Take: As excited as I am to see this fight, I just don’t see Mighty Mouse coming away with the upset. The champion is far too quick and his conditioning is among the best. The only way Johnson wins this fight is if he can take the fight to the ground and control Dominic the way he did with Torres. My prediction is Cruz by decision.
