Russian Sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of Barrie, Ontario
The Combat Club may be new to the MMA gym scene, but head instructor Bernard Antle certainly isn’t. With 22 years Martial Arts experience he brings a wealth of knowledge to his lessons. Located in Barrie, Ontario, The Combat Club is a gym not to soon be forgotten.
Since 2006, The Combat Club has been providing instruction in the martial arts in the Innisfil and Barrie, Ontario area. Students from Barrie, Borden, Alliston, Collingwood, Midland, Orilla, and Bracebridge have all enjoyed the classes and the intense workouts.
The Combat Club is a mixed martial arts program. In it, focus is placed on the three areas of fighting: stand-up, clinch, and ground. The Clubs mission is to present techniques and drills in the most simplified, direct, and efficient method possible.
The Club uses Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Russian Sambo, Western Boxing, Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Judo, Greco-Roman and Free style Wrestling as primary resources. A premium is placed on “functional” skill — being able to perform a technique against an un-cooperative opponent in a consistent manner. The ultimate goal is to create a complete, well-rounded mixed martial artist, have fun, and learn the arts in a positive and relaxed environment

- Russian Sambo (Combat & Sport)
Sambo wrestling is a composite style of jacket wrestling originally developed in Russia to serve as a common form of sport wrestling for the fifteen different republics of the former Soviet Union, each of which had one or more of its own distinct styles of folk wrestling, with widely varying rules. It was also used as a form of hand-to-hand combat preparation and training by Soviet military for use in unarmed combat. Sambo today is practiced in two flavors: Sport Sambo, the third style of international wrestling and a globally popular form of submission grappling; and Combat Sambo, a method of self-defense training. The term SAMBO is an acronym for the Russian phrase “SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya” or in English language, “Self-defense Without Weapons.”
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.
- Mixed martial arts (MMA)
MMA is a full contact combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting technigues are used, including striking and grappling.

“My weekly training at the Combat Club in Barrie has made a positive impact on sharpening and learning new skills that I would have not of learned even though I’ve trained at many dojo’s in Barrie and down in the GTA. They provide top-notch instruction and motivation aimed at developing your fitness, self-discipline, self-defense,self-confidence; not only just for the competition game. I assure you that the skills you learn here you won’t learn anywhere else and is by far the best Mixed Martial Art School that will help you become prepared as a person and if desired, competition ready. Overall, the student and instructor environment is one with friendships and camaraderie. Here everyone’s ego is left at the door and the club is well suited for all levels of fitness and martial art experience. ‘See you on the mats’” – Chris ‘The Matador’ Vorano
“I am a 15 year student of the martial arts holding black belts in Karate and traditional Ju-Jitsu under Master Jeff Cook of the Sarasota Budo Club. I also hold a blue belt ranking in BJJ under Charles Dos Anjos who runs an affiliate school of Royce Gracie. This summer, while visiting Canada for 2 months I came to meet with Bernie Antle. While training with Bernie I learned many new techniques and applied them during free sparring time. I found Bernie’s workouts to be extremely challenging and rewarding. As I am an instructor at the Earl Harris Karate Academy in Valrico Florida, I have documented many of Bernie’s teachings as they are worthy of teaching my students. Thank you Bernie for awesome instruction and I look forward to next summer.” – Michael Pancer, Sarasota Fl
