Canada’s newewst and most exciting MMA gym
Xtreme Couture Toronto, a 33,000 square foot facility, will be located at 700 Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke. The facility will feature instructors teaching Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Freestyle and Greco Roman Wresting, Judo, Submission Grappling, and Traditional Boxing. The gym is an unbelievable combination of Mixed Martial Arts and fitness into what is being described as the first “Super Gym”. Move over hockey, Canada is officially the home of one of the most impressive MMA training facilities worldwide.
Everything is brand new and just waiting for the blood the sweat and.. well.. sorry, no tears allowed in MMA. The front doors open to what would appear to be a really good gym with the usual amenities – the welcome desk, the fully stocked juice bar, to the left is the store with the shirts and gear and you can see the rows of elliptical, treadmill and cycles as you gaze further down the front windows. It’s only when you make your way around the entire 33,000 square feet that the scope of the gym hits you.
Past the cardio equipment you hit a yoga room, then a separate spinning class area, followed by a full featured weight room with dumbbells that would make Arnold proud. As you come around the corner the shoes need to come off as thousands upon thousands of square feet of mat area await your MMA initiation. While not intentional, the mat area is almost sprawled out like a red carpet and at its end it leads to the focal point of the facility – a full sized boxing ring and.. the cage.
One of the first facilities of its kind – Xtreme Couture Toronto will encompass an extremely high level fitness area and also all of the aspect of Mixed Martial Arts that you would expect from a world class MMA facility.
MMATraining.com had the fortune to attend a pre-opening tour one day before the grand opening and as well as taking in the festivities on opening day.
On the eve on the grand opening, with fork lift trucks more prevalent than staff, MMATraining.com was greeted by Robin Black, media relations for Xtreme Couture. You may recognize Robin from Much Music or his music accolades, but you may not know that Robin is training to be a fighter himself and has his first competition in July 2008. Black was a tremendous host on both days handling a hectic schedule. We captured the pre-opening tour on video for our mmatraining.com fans who couldn’t make the trip to Toronto.
The day began interviewing “Captain America” himself, Randy Couture. MMATraining.com was first up on the media list thanks again to Robin Black. Randy was more than gracious and we are all truly lucky to have such a wonderful ambassador to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. You can watch our interview with Randy below.
A strong selling point of this gym will be the gyms instructors. In what appears to a fantasy camp of top young coaching talent, Xtreme Couture’s staff is an MMA arsenal:
Mark Hominick – MMAtraining.com’s Hominick is one of the most talented technical strikers in the entire world. The former world champion kick boxer is one of the top MMA fighters in Canada and one of the top 145 lbs fighters in the world. At just 25 years of age, the UFC, WEC and TKO veteran will only get better, which is a scary thing for his opponents. He will be teaching MMA and Muay Thai.
Chris Horodecki – One of the finest young 155 lbs fighters in the world and one of the best to come out of Canada, Chris is a star of the IFL and has just turned 20 year old. He will be teaching MMA and Muay Thai.
Mark Bocek – One of the top Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters in the world and currently a veteran of 3 UFC fights, Toronto’s own Bocek will be teaching BJJ. As quiet as they come outside the cage, the soft spoken fighter is a warrior inside it. Mark sat down with MMATraining.com at the grand opening for an interview – check it out.
Jeff Joslin – The Joslin name is synonymous with martial arts in Canada and throughout the world. Jeff is a veteran of the UFC and is a black belt in Jiu Jitsu. He will be teaching MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Shawn Geris – One of the top wrestlers in Canada and a co-founder of the Xtreme Couture Toronto, Shawn will be teaching Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling. We caught up with Shawn at the Grand opening.
Misha Cirkunov – One of the top grapplers in the entire world Misha will be teaching Judo and grappling. Misha is no stranger to top competition at his young age, as he took on Babula Sobral last year in a grappling match. Please check out our interview with Misha, below.
Rounding out this all star cast of coaches are:
- Dave Mair – Freestyle Wrestling
- Brent Beauparlant – MMA and Wrestling
- Yuri Botnarenko – Greco Roman Wrestling
- Marco Antico – Muay Thai
- Patrick Goulah – Traditional Jiu-Jitsu
The owners and coaches at Xtreme Couture were truly gracious in their hosting of MMATraining.com. Everyone was available to chat and there didn’t seem to be one ego in the entire place. And that’s saying something, as it’s a big place. Randy and his team have sought after the most talented group of coaches they could find, who really want to help the students get better. If you are interested in MMA or just want regular workouts, then Xtreme Couture Toronto is the gym for you. Head on down and check it out. You will be thankful that you did.
We can only imagine the influx of Canadian talent this gym will produce going forward. We expect this gym to have a serious influence on the talent pool produced in Canada for years to come and look forward to the day when Canada is known for its hockey players and MMA all stars.
