Many have heard the term Hot August Nights, but in regards to the UFC, August is proving to be a month loaded with great fights for mma enthusiasts.  We’ve seen the month start off with a rematch between “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz and “Suga” Rashad Evans at UFC 133

Evans had been waiting for a title shot with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, but had to be sidelined with an injury.  We all know “Bones” Jones, Rashad’s former training partner, who he is now at odds with, stepped in to replace Evans and win the title.  Evans and Jones were set to square off, but then Jones had to pull out of the fight due to an injury he sustained during the fight with “Shogun.”  Phil Davis enters the picture, but then he too has to pull out of the fight due to an injury.  Enter Tito Ortiz.  Ortiz was coming off a big win against a younger, stronger, and quicker Ryan Bader just weeks prior where he surprised everyone and submitted Bader with a guillotine early in the first round.

Evans however proved to be too fast for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” and the fight had to be stopped in the second round.  The win confirms Evans is indeed the #1 contender and will face the winner of Jones vs Rampage for the UFC light heavyweight title.

At UFC 133 we also saw a Vitor Belfort who looked incredible and showed his hands are still as fast as ever as he pummeled Yoshihiro Akiyama.  Many were saying we were seeing a “vintage” Vitor Belfort who was a phenomenon in this sport at such a young age.  Belfort wants another shot at the title, but according to Dana White he still has some work ahead of him.

Next week mma fans will be able to see UFC on Versus 5 for free through their cable network provider.  The event will take place in Milwaukee at the Bradley Center on August 14th.

Now this may not be a pay per view event but it does still contain some great fights.  A few of the main fights we will see are ex-WEC champ Ben Henderson take on Jim Miller, Joseph Benavidez vs Eddie Wineland, and of course the headliners Dan Hardy vs Chris Lytle.

Just one week following the UFC on Versus 5 we will get to see Anderson Silva defend his title at UFC 134 against Yushin Okami.  On the card we will also see Mauricio “Shogun” Rua take on Forrest Griffin and Brendan Schaub will fight Minotauro Noguiera in a battle of the heavyweight division.

The month of August is packed with great UFC fights, something that we are coming to expect from the organization as more and more fighters join the sport of MMA and as the sport continues to evolve into a household name.
