Rising star Michael Chandler pushed his perfect record to 10-0 this weekend with a dominating performance against seasoned veteran Akihiro Gono in the main event at Bellator 67. Chandler, the organization’s lightweight champion, landed a perfectly-placed right in the opening minute of action. The blow dropped Gono, prompting Chandler to follow up with a series of shots from above to earn the TKO stoppage.

After the bout Gono announced his retirement from MMA. The 37-year old leaves the sport with a 32 wins in a fifty-plus fight career including success against Hector Lombard and Gegard Mousasi.

Other notable moments on the card included Ryan Ford making his successful promotional debut in a comeback win against Luis Santos as well as Bryan Baker avoiding the submission-stylings of Ben Saunders to earn a Unanimous Decision nod. The victory earned Baker a spot in the Season 6 Welterweight Tournament final where he’ll face the winner of David Rickels-Karl Amoussou.

MMATraining Take: Chandler-Gono was comically bad to begin with in terms of the matchmaking and played out as it should have. There was absolutely no reason to waste Chandler’s talents or risk his health/hype by putting him against a guy well past his prime who entered the bout on a losing streak.
