The UFC appears to already be targeting a specific date/event for the upcoming title-fight between heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (15-1) and former belt-wearer Cain Velasquez (10-1). Though nothing official is locked in, according to UFC President Dana White, the organization is hoping to have their rematch go down on September 22 at UFC 152 in Toronto.

White made the announcement Friday night after the conclusion of UFC on FX 3. The event is also expected to feature the return of B.J. Penn who will face rising welterweight star Rory MacDonald.

Velasquez and Dos Santos met this past November where “Cigano” only needed 64 seconds to lay claim to the divisional strap, knocking Velasquez out in front of millions tuning in on FOX. Each has fought a single time since with Dos Santos successfully defending his gold against Frank Mir a few weeks ago and Velasquez pounding out Antonio Silva at the same show.

MMATraining Take: Toronto is one of the cities around the world where MMA is truly embraced so it makes sense to see a major card being put together for the UFC’s upcoming stop there. While I’m not a fan of Velasquez getting a rematch so quickly the organization doesn’t have many other legitimate options, if any, so I understand the booking.
