UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen isn’t one to second-guess himself very often, but in the case of his recent loss to divisional champion Anderson Silva it turns out the outspoken 185er left the bout with a sense of regret. While the actual defeat doesn’t appear to be bothering Sonnen, his decision to stay on the ground after missing an errant spinning backfist is a different story altogether.

“The only thing I would do differently is I would’ve got up. I would’ve had to take some punches,” said Sonnen on a recent episode of MMA Uncensored. “That was the risk and that’s why I waited for him, but that didn’t work out. The other option was to get up and start fighting.”

As far as his future, Sonnen said his sights are set on winning a title rather than procuring major paydays and that he’s remaining open-minded on the possibility of moving up to 205 pounds.

MMATraining Take: I guess that’s why they say hindsight is 20/20. Still, interesting he didn’t say he would have opted to avoid throwing a spinning backfist instead of not reacting the right way after doing so. He should have been shooting takedowns the entire time, not trying to get fancy with his footwork.
