Chael Sonnen‘s regular segment on UFC Tonight entitled “Chael’s Corner” gives the UFC middleweight contender a chance to fire off at his own discretion. This week, Sonnen decided to defend Alistair Overeem. Yes, you read that correctly, Sonnen actually defends Overeem amid his recent drug test that came back with elevated levels of testosterone in his system.

Overeem will go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission next week in hopes of receiving his fight license and facing Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight title in May.

“Congratulations to MMA media, right when I think you’re incompetence can’t get to any higher level, the Alistair Overeem story comes out,” Sonnen said. “If I’m a member of the media and someone tells me that Alistair Overeem failed a drug test, the very first thing I’m going to say is, ‘Really? What substance did he test positive for?’ Alistair Overeem did not test positive for anything. End of story.”

It’s possible the argument could be the one the public hears from Overeem and his team next week before NSAC. While his levels were above – well above, in fact – where they should be, his camp has come forward to say he has a good excuse for the entire scenario.

MMATraining Take: Sonnen’s defense sounds like the same kind of thing he would have said about himself after having high levels of testosterone in his system following his fight with Anderson Silva in 2010. Sonnen’s ratio was 16.9:1, above Overeem’s 14:1 testing.
