It appears former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Dan Henderson will return to the UFC for his third run in the organization this November and will mix it up with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of UFC 139.

Though the UFC hasn’t announced anything official, word from the promotion could come as soon as this afternoon when the company holds a press conference relating to UFC on FOX.

News of Henderson vs. Rua was initially reported by MMAWeekly and has since been confirmed by multiple other outlets.

Henderson was last seen racking up a trio of consecutive victories including wins over Renato Sobral, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, and Fedor Emelianenko. In 2009, the hard-hitting grappler had also won three straight in the Octagon before ultimately ending up in Strikeforce as the result of his inability to reach agreeable terms on a new contract with the UFC.

Meanwhile, “Shogun” is coming off an extremely impressive knockout of Forrest Griffin last month at UFC 134, the 17th strike-based stoppage of the 29-year old’s career. Rua is 20-5 overall and holds past wins over Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida, and Alistair Overeem.

UFC 139 is scheduled for November 19 in San Jose and will also feature Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles and Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story.

MMATraining Take: This is a great fight and I’m excited to see “Hendo” back in the UFC! Not only should it be a competitive encounter between two of MMA’s legends but it makes sense in the title-picture too since Rua is only a fight removed from being champion and Henderson held the Strikeforce LHW belt before vacating it this week to join the UFC.
