Image of Kenny Florian by Neal BurstynNumber 1 UFC lightweight contender Kenny Florian and Strength and conditioning coach Kevin Kearns were in Toronto at Xtreme Couture over the weekend and put on one of the best MMA seminars that the city has seen in a long time.

It was a unique experience for the 40+ participants and the 100+ in attendance to get to see the strength and conditioning side from Kearns, as well as be put through some of the most technical MMA drills in all of the world with Florian.

Kearns began the session by talking about his training philosophy and preached that he doesn’t claim to know everything, but works his hardest every day to become better at what he does. Kevin put the group through a series of stretches that many had never done before. Then it was on to some hard core strength and conditioning drills which are the same ones used by Kenny Florian, Marcus Davis, Patrick Cote and Kurt Pellegrino.

Mid way through Kearns had divided us into groups and we worked at one of the most challenging MMA circuits you could imagine which included bands, balls and all different pieces of equipment. It was exhausting and fun at the same time and mimicked the level of intensity of an actual MMA fight.

An eloquent speaker, Kearns is an extremely likeable guy, has an abundance of energy and is one of the best strength coaches in the world. We were very fortunate to have him come up for the day and can’t wait to do it again.

Florian took to the mats and everyone was excited to see the number 1 lightweight contender right in front of our eyes. Since we were all warmed up from the Kearns seminar Kenny got right into teaching some stand up techniques and focused on the Thai clinch, for which he is known as an expert.

Kenny then walked us through some ground techniques that were unbelievable. Some highlights were how put a triangle on someone quickly and how to escape from a triangle in the most efficient way. But really every element of the fight game was covered. Florian continues to stress those basic fundamentals that win fights and we all know his are some of the best in the world.

Kenny showed us techniques that he has developed over time, and threw in some fun new ones in as well.

I had heard good things about Florian before this seminar and he met and exceeded all of our expectations. He is truly a gentleman. He treated everyone at the seminar as his peer and Kenny made you feel like you were his friend – in just two hours.

He stuck around after to sign autographs and take pictures for over an hour and he could not have been more impressive. Everyone got their monies worth and a Kearns / Florian seminar is not one you will ever want to miss.

We thank Kenny and Kevin for coming up to Toronto and putting in 4+ hours on the mats and executing an unbelievable seminar for everyone at Xtreme Couture Toronto.

Last but not least, good luck to Kenny in his preparation for his UFC title shot this summer vs. BJ Penn.
