UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo has been linked to a fight this summer for the past month. However, until today no opponent had been attached to a bout with the brilliant Brazilian.

Though many felt Aldo would fight Hatsu Hioki it turns out 23-year old Erik Koch will step into the role of top contender though no specific date has been set for their dance with UFC 147 (June 23) or UFC 149 (July 21) the likely landing places.

MMAWeekly was first to report the fight with sources close to both camps confirming the pairing was in place.

The 13-1 Koch has won his last four fights including three way by of an opening round stoppage. He hasn’t fought since September when he outpointed Jonathan Brookins due to injury. He also holds past victories over Eric Wisely and Raphael Assuncao.

MMATraining Take: With Hioki and Dustin Poirier essentially off the table I’d say Koch was their only real option. It’s not a “sexy” fight by any means but Koch has some serious skills and it should be entertaining nonetheless.
