With Cain Velasquez currently hurt and potentially out for six months there has been an increase in discussion pertaining to the possibility of Alistair Overeem receiving the next crack at UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos’ title. Overeem is currently suspended but is expected to return to action in December.

Dos Santos recently offered up his thoughts on the matter and made it clear he still hasn’t forgotten Overeem’s positive hit for a severely elevated T:E ratio brought on by testosterone use.

“I don’t think Overeem deserves to be fighting for the title at this point because he got his drug test failed so I think Cain Velasquez deserve his rematch against me,” said the heavy-handed title-holder on last week’s episode of Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored. “But it depends (on) the UFC. (If) they tell me to fight Overeem or Cain Velasquez or I don’t know who…I’ll be ready to fight.”

MMATraining Take: I don’t think Velasquez or Overeem particularly deserve to be #1 contender but in the context of the division each is an understandable choice. Cormier is probably the true #2 after his recent run. After all, Velasquez is a win removed from being flattened by Dos Santos and the guy he beat was coming off a knockout loss.
