It was a memorable evening for many reasons last night after all-female promotion Invicta FC made its debut in fight-friendly Kansas City. The women involved turned in a great show featuring plenty of back-and-forth brawls as well as some competitive clashes and highlight-reel stoppages.

The show was capped off by Marloes Coenen’s victory over French submission specialist Romy Ruyssen where she used improved Muay Thai along with her grappling base to neutralize the French submission specialist and pick up the decision win. Coenen, a former Strikeforce bantamweight champ, improved her overall record to 20-5 with the performance and took advantage of the moment by calling out current 135-pound title-holder Ronda Rousey.

“Ronda, I’m coming for you,” said the typically reserved “Rumina” after her victory.

Other notable performances including Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Randi Miller winning in her MMA debut with some vicious ground-and-pound after a slow start, Jessica Penne handle a game Lisa Ward-Ellis, and a Draw between Leslie Smith-Kaitlin Young meriting an immediate rematch given the closeness of the encounter.

Invicta FC will return to K.C. on July 28 with another show, this time headlined by a bout between undefeated Olympic wrestler Sara McMann and polished grappler Shayna Baszler.

MMATraining Take: Invicta FC may not have hit it out of the park this weekend but they at least got a standing double, maybe even head-first-slide triple. Mo Lawal was insightful on commentary, the action was good, and the event looked slick for a FREE show let alone the first of the organization’s history.
