It was a summer of exciting featherweight action in Bellator for their inaugural “Summer Series” and the tournament final didn’t disappoint at Bellator 48.

Bellator season 2 lightweight tournament winner, Pat Curran, become the Bellator “Summer Series” featherweight tournament winner, with a stunning head kick KO victory over top ranked 145 fighter Marlon Sandro in the second round. Neither man had a distinct advantage throughout the fight but Sandro seemed in control due to his speed, head movement, and diverse striking. Curran finally figured out the head movement of Sandro though, feinting with punches before landing a beautiful head kick that Sandro ducked into.

The win gives Curran a future shot at the Bellator featherweight title, which will be up for grabs in season 5 as champion Joe Warren takes on top challenger and season 4 featherweight tournament winner Patricio Freire.

In the co-main event of the evening, Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad defeated Paul Buentello in a disappointing fight for the fans. Known for his high-caliber wrestling, Konrad decided to stand for the majority of the fight with Buentello. Instead of capitalizing on Konrad’s willingness to stand, Buentello, known for his boxing ability, looked passive on the feet and never committed to his strikes. The fight went to the judges and Konrad picked up the victory, keeping him undefeated in the sport.
