Rising light heavyweight star Phil Davis will look to bounce back from his first career loss on August 4 when he faces former heavyweight Chad Griggs at UFC on FOX 4. The 27-year old came out guns blazing to open up his career with nine straight wins including success against Alexander Gustafsson, Brian Stann, and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but lost a decision to Rashad Evans in his last outing.

News of the match-up was confirmed on Monday night by the UFC.

The 9-1 Davis has an interesting challenge in the form of Griggs, an 11-2 adversary who has finished every opponent he’s beaten. “The Grave Digger” was last seen being submitted by Travis Browne at UFC 145, his first loss in five years.

Griggs-Davis join other announced bouts on the lineup such as headliner StannHector Lombard, Browne-Ben Rothwell, and Lyoto Machida-Ryan Bader.

MMATraining Take: It seems the UFC has no interest in keeping Griggs around if they’re forcing him to debut at 205 pounds against a guy like Davis. It’s a shame too since he’s a fairly entertaining fighter with some personality and the propensity for putting opponents away.
