Thiago Alves will return to the Octagon in 2012, but it will not be in Brazil at UFC 142 as many had expected. Instead, Alves and Martin Kampmann are being slotted for March 3 at an unannounced UFC event. Alves is coming off a victory over Papy Apedi at UFC 138 that made him 2-3 in his last five bouts for the UFC, while Kampmann was last seen outpointing Rick Story at UFC 139 in a performance halting a two-fight losing streak for “The Hitman.”

News of the match-up was first reported by MMAWeekly though nothing has been confirmed by the UFC.

“It was the fight I asked and I know UFC fans will love it,” said Alves, in a recent interview with Tatame. “He’ll go for the trade of punches, he’ll come for it, so it’s a fight on which the styles really combine.”

Alves also noted that the UFC asked him to compete on the UFC 142 card in Brazil, however, the former No. 1 contender at welterweight did not believe he had enough time to prepare, saying, “It’s too close…they’ve asked me if I wanted to fight in Rio and I said I’d love to, but not this time.”

MMATraining Take: This is another excellent opportunity for Alves to continue working his way up the welterweight charts. Kampmann is a known name and coming off a big win over Story. If Alves can secure an impressive victory, a big-time bout could be in his immediate future.
