Walking away from the Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale with an uncharacteristic “Submission of the Night” was Diego Brandao who won the featherweight crown with an Armbar in the final seconds of the bout’s opening round. The victory came after Brandao rocked Bermudez moments before finding himself on the cusp of defeat after eating a stiff shot. However, the emotional Brandao maintained his composure, saw an opportunity, and locked in a fight-ending hold as the round ticked down towards expiration. The brawling Brazilian won $40,000 for the stoppage.

Their one-round affair was also considered “Fight of the Night” meaning Brandao brought home a total of $80,000 on top of his contracted rate as a means of fulfilling a dream by helping his mother buy a new house.

Going home with the distinction of “Knockout of the Night” was John Dodson, the Ultimate Fighter 14 bantamweight king, after rocking opponent TJ Dillashaw in the first frame of their 135-pound contest. Similarly to Brandao and Bermudez “The Magician” was awarded $40,000 for his win.

MMATraining Take: I would have given FotN to Tony Ferguson vs. Yves Edwards as I felt their bout was as competitive as Brandao/Bermudez but went longer. Otherwise fairly good bonuses, though I’m not sure Dillashaw’s fight wasn’t stopped a bit early.
