The first UFC event of 2012 arrived and, after some Friday the 13th hijinks relating to co-headilner Anthony Johnson‘s weight, the entire lineup came ready to rumble in Rio de Janeiro! The main event featured featherweight champ Jose Aldo putting his gold on the line against unbeaten grappler Chad Mendes, retaining the title with an opening round finish, and in general was a card full of entertaining match-ups including the aforementioned Johnson’s bout against Brazilian hero Vitor Belfort as well as undercard action like Terry Etim–Edson Barboza and Sam Stout-Thiago Tavares.
Aldo’s finishing sequence came after Mendes had his back in a standing position before Aldo broke fee, spinning around and landing a stiff knee when Mendes attempted to duck down and change levels. The blow rocked Mendes, sending him backwards to the canvas, where Aldo ended the bout with a well-placed right hand. The loss was the first in Mendes’ career and brought Aldo’s record to an incredible 21-1.
Belfort came away with a victory in his co-headlining clash with Johnson after submitting “Rumble” with a Rear-Naked Choke. The ending marked the third submission loss of Johnson’s career and will likely lead to his release from the organization.
