Tonight MMA fans received a true treat in the form of UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson, an event emanating from Japan with seven fights scheduled for PPV and another handful of bouts on Facebook/FX featuring some of the region’s biggest stars.

Headlined by Benson Henderson’s successful attempt to lay claim to the lightweight title currently held by Frankie Edgar, UFC 144 also featured fights such as Mark Hunt-Cheick Kongo, Hatsu Hioki-Bart Palaszewski, Yoshihiro Akiyama-Jake Shields, and Quinton Jackson-Ryan Bader, as well as action from Yushin Okami, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, and Takanori Gomi.

Henderson’s triumphant performance came in a closely-contested outpointing of Edgar who scored more takedowns but ultimately ate more damage too. “Bendo” is now 16-2 with wins in his last four fights.

Meanwhile, Bader took advantage of a slightly out-of-shape Jackson by controlling him on the ground after a few close scrapes. Also victorious were Shields, who ruined Akiyama’s welterweight debut by edging him out on the scorecards, and Pettis thanks to a textbook head-kick knockout of Lauzon.
