UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz may be out of action for an extended period of time after recently tearing his ACL but fellow 135er Urijah Faber, who Cruz was set to face in July, wants to stay busy. In fact, Faber didn’t even waste time responding to the situation, releasing a video with his take on Cruz’s injury within hours of the news originally breaking.

“I’m thinking an interim title fight,” said Faber, making his case for creating a divisional belt to keep things rolling while Cruz recovers.

Cruz hasn’t fought since October and won’t be ready to fight again until early/mid 2013 based on the damage to his knee.

Faber elaborated on his plan, pointing to the possibility of staying on the UFC 148 lineup and facing 28-1 Renan Barao for the interim strap. Barao is also currently scheduled to fight on the same card.

“I’m hoping for a top contender. Renan Barao, in my opinion is next up with Michael McDonald after that and Ivan Menjivar after that. I’m just waiting to see. I know as much as you guys do, but I’m ready to scrap on July 7. And, as far as I’m concerned, that’s when it’s going down.”

MMATraining Take: It thrills me to hear Faber is open to a fight with Barao at UFC 148! It makes perfect sense considering the Brazilian is arguably a more-deserving contender than Faber given his record and is already planning to fight at UFC 148. The UFC failing to make this match-up come together would be akin to blowing an uncontested lay-up. It’s truly that much of a no-brainer.
